Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has revealed that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) had given him a direct ticket to vie for Nairobi Gubernatorial seat in the August 9 general elections.
Sonko stated on Tuesday, April 26, while receiving his nomination certificate at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka Command Center in Karen, Nairobi, that he declined the offer after speaking with his Wiper party boss.
“Kalonzo is an elder to me, he is like my father. He is a relative…Actually, I had a direct nomination for UDA in Nairobi, but because of the respect I give to Kalonzo, I decided to respect his offer,” Sonko said.
The former governor also noted that Nairobi residents had promised to elect him irrespective of the party, a factor he had considered before making the final decision.
Sonko also dismissed the claims that he has been presented as the governor aspirant to spoil for others saying that he is in the race to win.
He further took a swipe at Azimio leader Raila Odinga for refusing to step down for Kalonzo as the Azimio flag bearer.
Sonko is in the race for governor of Mombasa to succeed Governor Ali Hassan Joho who is serving his second and last term in office.
