Sonko’s Impeachment Review To Proceed ln Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Kenya will hear a review of Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s impeachment appeal judgement Today Tuesday July 26.

This is in response to the respondents’ request for additional time to file their responses and submissions for the matter.

The Nairobi County Assembly, the Senate, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission are among them (IEBC).

The orders follow the former Governor’s return to the Supreme Court, where he asked the judges to overturn their own decision, just three days after the court dismissed his impeachment appeal.

Sonko requests that Chief Justice Martha Koome recuse herself from the case, citing comments she made suggesting that those impeached should not be allowed to run.

He also wants the court to overturn its decision because Justice Said Chitembwe, a member of the High Court bench that upheld his impeachment, is currently being investigated for misconduct by a tribunal.

The politician claimed Chitembwe was biased and vindictive in his handling of his impeachment case.

Sonko suffered a major setback when the Supreme Court denied his appeal on Friday, July 15.

The IEBC has since revoked Sonko’s clearance to run for governor of Mombasa.

At the same time, the leader has filed an appeal with the East African Court of Justice, challenging the Supreme Court’s decision.
He claimed that the Supreme Court and Kenyan courts reached an unjust decision.

“The Kenyan judicial arm’s decision is tainted with illegality because the high court’s decision, as upheld by the Supreme Court, was influenced through corrupt means,” he said.

Sonko requests that the EAC stay the execution of the Supreme Court’s decision pending the hearing and determination of his appeal.
