South Africa Wins Edmonton Rugby Title

On Sunday, South Africa won the World Sevens Series title in Edmonton, Canada, defeating Great Britain 24-12 despite COVID-19 letdowns.

Muller du Plessis and Siviwe Soyizwapi each scored two tries to ensure an easy victory for the South Africans, who also won the Vancouver Sevens last week.

Britain’s tries were scored by Robbie Ferguson and Tom Bowen.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has ravaged this season’s international seven-a-side circuit, with World Rugby canceling matches in Singapore and Cape Town earlier this month.

Due to travel restrictions and the Delta variants, the Hong Kong Sevens had previously been canceled. The Dubai Sevens will also be integrated into the 2022 circuit, rather than being part of the 2021 series.

South Africa’s victory on Sunday came at the end of a tournament that was significantly depleted, with heavyweight nations like Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand all opting out.

Kenyan Shujaas came in third place in the Edmonton Sevens after a convincing 33-14 victory over hosts Canada in the third-place playoffs match.
