The South Korean government has announced plans to construct a 20-kilometer dual carriageway from the Machakos turn-off to Emali, aimed at easing congestion on the busy Mombasa Road.
The project is part of efforts to improve transport infrastructure and reduce traffic bottlenecks that frequently affect the route.
Currently at the procurement stage, the road’s construction is expected to begin in early 2025 and will involve collaboration between South Korean and Kenyan engineers.
The dual carriageway is also integral to the larger Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway masterplan, which is set to enhance connectivity between the capital and Kenya’s coastal regions.
Listed under the Economic Innovation Partnership Program (EIPP), the project is one of several initiatives designed to bolster development in Konza Technopolis over the next three years.
This follows a 2021 agreement between Korea and Kenya to develop the Konza Technopolis Smart City Masterplan, with projects valued at Ksh 129 billion.
Nam Sang Kyoo, Acting Ambassador of South Korea to Kenya, expressed optimism, noting that the initiative would advance Kenya’s smart technology sector.
The announcement comes shortly after the Kenya National Highways Authority revealed plans for a 66-kilometer highway in Thika, which is set to transform the area into Kenya’s sixth city.
