South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said on Tuesday that he hopes improving relations between North Korea and China will help advance denuclearisation and maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In a phone conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Cho stressed the importance of Beijing’s constructive role in addressing tensions with Pyongyang, according to a statement released by South Korea’s foreign ministry.
“Minister Cho expressed hope that relations between North Korea and China will develop in a way that contributes to denuclearisation and peace on the Korean Peninsula,” the ministry said.
Cho also reaffirmed Seoul’s commitment to continued dialogue and coordination with Beijing on issues related to North Korea, amid rising regional security concerns following Pyongyang’s recent weapons tests and growing military ties with Russia.
Wang, for his part, reiterated China’s position that stability on the Korean Peninsula should be maintained through dialogue and diplomacy.
The call comes as regional powers monitor deepening cooperation between North Korea and China, which marked 75 years of diplomatic relations this year, amid heightened tensions between Pyongyang and Washington over nuclear and missile programs.
