Embattled Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned from her office.
In a letter penned to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Elachi thanked the leadership for selecting her, amid the strong opposition she faced.
“This morning I want to humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Sir, it gives me great pleasure to have served as the speaker for Nairobi County from September 2017 when we finished the election to date.”
Elachi, who also played boss to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services, urged county workers to let NMS work in transforming Kenya.
“We have seen tremendous change and also challenges. With the coming in of NMS, I belive Nairobi will transform into a better capital city.”
Elachi cited frustrations and even life-threatening incidences that surrounded City Hall.
“Sir, notwithstanding, for the last few days we have seen lots of conflicts and even life-threatening incidences. I humbly tender my resignation,”
Elachi was recently given a notice of suspension by the now-defunct county clerk, Jacob Ngwele, in a motion that was presented by various MPs.
In the letter addressed to the Speaker, Ngwele confirmed he received a Notice of Motion, dated July 27, 2020, sponsored by MCA Waithera Chege, to remove Elachi on grounds of violation of the Constitution, incompetence, and gross misconduct.
The incident resulted in chaotic scenes at City Hall with MCAs allied to Governor Sonko clashing with those supporting Elachi and the NMS.
