Speaker Orders Fresh Vetting of MPs’ Security After Kasipul MP’s Assassination

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has ordered all Members of Parliament to submit their personal security details for fresh vetting in the wake of the shocking assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Speaking at the late MP’s requiem mass held at Consolata Shrine in Nairobi, Wetang’ula underscored the need for enhanced security measures, both within Parliament and across the capital.

“In light of the tragedy that befell our colleague, I encourage the police not to limit their investigations to the City Mortuary. We must examine all circumstances leading to his death,” said the Speaker.

He directed the Clerk of Parliament to compile CCTV footage documenting the slain legislator’s activities on April 30, from his arrival at the parliamentary gym at 6:00 a.m. to his departure at 7:00 p.m.

Wetang’ula further urged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure that all CCTV cameras across the city operate continuously. “We must see to it that every camera is functional 24/7. This will help deter criminal elements and create a safer city for all,” he said.

The Speaker also appealed to all MPs to cooperate with the vetting process. “Submit your security details. Kikulacho kinguoni mwako—danger often lies within. With this information, we can help strengthen your personal protection,” he added.

MP Were was fatally shot while stuck in traffic by an armed assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has so far arrested six suspects linked to the high-profile murder.
