National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has directed the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to table a preliminary report on the death of Albert Ojwang’ on Thursday at 2:30 PM, citing the urgency and gravity of the matter.
The directive follows growing concern among lawmakers over the tragic death of Ojwang’, allegedly at the hands of police officers. Nyando MP Jared Okello led the call for immediate action, with Speaker Wetang’ula acknowledging the issue as “by all means a very serious matter.”
“This is causing widespread anxiety,” the Speaker said. “I know Thursday is Budget Day, but we will dedicate time beforehand to hear a preliminary report.”
Committee Chair and Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo confirmed that both the Inspector General of Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) have been summoned to brief the committee on the incident. “This is a matter of national concern. The young man died in a place where he should have felt safe,” he said.
MPs from across the political spectrum expressed outrage and sorrow. Tharaka MP George Murugara questioned the integrity of police conduct, comparing the situation to colonial-era abuses. “Are there officers giving orders to execute young men? This must stop,” he said, calling for a review of police training standards.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo urged swift prosecution of those responsible. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” she said, adding that if IPOA lacks capacity, external investigators should be considered. “This cannot be another case that disappears once tempers cool.”
The House is expected to debate the preliminary findings on Thursday, with Speaker Wetang’ula assuring members they will have the opportunity to respond.
