National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on Members of Parliament to tighten the legislation governing the Country’s transport sector.
Speaker Wetang’ula raised concerns on the rising cases of road accidents, indicating that the Country is losing several lives to road carnage. He indicated the importance of the Nation to reflect deeply on how to curb this menace.
“We condemn the recklessness of the truck driver who caused 15 deaths in the tragic Malaha Junction accident at Webuye Sub-County in Bungoma. It’s devastating to learn that more than 21 people are admitted to various hospitals, as two people require urgent specialised treatment,” noted Speaker Wetang’ula.
The National Government and the Speaker of the Bungoma County Government have organized for the referral of the two critical patients.
While visiting the accident victims, Speaker Wetang’ula called on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to move with speed to ensure that reckless drivers are removed from our roads.

“I urge our Courts to pay attention to what is happening in our society. If you don’t deserve to be on the roads, then keep off. If you are on the road and don’t pay attention, then you deserve punishment,” he noted.
Hon. Wetang’ula, who spoke from Bungoma on Wednesday morning, said H.E President Dr. William Ruto has assured Kenyans of the government’s support to the bereaved families and those admitted to hospitals.
He said the County Government will cater for the medical fees of all those affected.
The Speaker announced the formation of a funeral committee led by Webuya East MP Hon. Marthin Wanyonyi Pepela and Bungoma Woman Rep. Hon. Catherine Wambilianga, who will be joined by the Bungoma Deputy Governor, H.E. Pst. Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany and Members of the County Assembly to plan for the funeral of the victims of the fatal accident.
According to Isaac, an affected resident who lost his wife, he holds to the hope that his three family members, including his father and brother, who suffered from fractured bones that are now admitted to the hospital, will be healed and discharged home.
“I lost my wife on the spot. My other brother had stomach injuries. We are seeking support from the well-wishers and hope that the Government will redesign the road.”
Doctors at the Webuye County Referral Hospital have already conducted postmortems on six bodies while awaiting to conduct the same on seven more bodies preserved at the facility.
The Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr. David Wanikina said at least two male patients will have to undergo specialized treatment.
“We are still receiving more patients from the accident scene; some who had been rushed to other facilities and are now receiving referrals.”
Dr. Wanikina said they had partnered with the Kenya Red Cross to conduct Psychosocial support.
There shall be a Special Mass on Monday, 16th March, 2026, at Webuye town to pray for the departed souls and wish a quick recovery to all those admitted to various Hospitals.
