Speaker Wetang’ula reveals he called DCI himself after Jirongo died hours after their meeting

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has provided a detailed account of the steps he took following the sudden death of his close friend, former politician Cyrus Jirongo.

Speaking on the night of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, during an interview with a local TV station, Wetang’ula insisted that he voluntarily cooperated with authorities and was not interrogated.

The Ford Kenya Party leader said he personally contacted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shortly after receiving the news of Jirongo’s death, noting that his goal was to assist investigators in tracing events leading to his friend’s passing.

“When Cyrus Jirongo, my very close friend, who was always in my company wherever he had time, died, on the night he had come to see me in Karen, where I live, after I got the news of his death, I personally called the DCI a day or two after,” Wetang’ula explained.

He added that he met Jirongo on the night of his death from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, after which he left to prepare for the burial of a Member of Parliament the following day.

“I said, ‘Look, I was one of the last few people to meet Cyrus. I would want to give you a statement myself so that you can trace any movement from there and see how he met his death,” Wetang’ula said.

The speaker emphasised that his cooperation was voluntary, responding to reports that authorities had questioned him.

“The DCI, when they issued a statement, said the Speaker of the National Assembly had volunteered a statement on Jirongo’s issue, and that is exactly what I did. Nobody interrogated me,” he stated.

Wetang’ula’s remarks aim to clarify his involvement and reassure the public on the steps he took after Jirongo’s death, following some media reports that he had been interrogated by the authorities.

Jirongo died on December 13, 2025, after his car was involved in a head-on collision with a bus ferrying passengers from Nairobi at the Karai area in Naivasha, along the busy Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

He was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his rural home in Lumakanda, Kakamega County.
