Ministry Probed Over Stadium Billions

A startling revelation has declassified how the Ministry of Sports has spent around Sh2.3 billion on the repair of ten stadiums.

According to the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Funds (SASDF) report for the financial year 2020-2021, Kipchoge Keino stadium was given Sh627 million for two phases of construction.

Kinoru stadium received Sh559 million, Ruringu was given Sh223 million, and Wote Stadium was given Sh197.4 million.

Chuka Stadium earned Sh114 million, Marsabit Sh169 million, and Kamariny Stadium Sh228 million. There has been no progress on any of the projects.

Fringe federations like Judo and Tong-Il Moo-Do benefited the most.

Kenya Tong-Il Moo-Do, a little-known martial arts organization, was given a whopping Sh80 million as of April 1, 2021, when the SASDF disbursed Sh4.3 billion.

The revelations come after Fifa, the world football governing body, issued a ban on Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums on Friday, thereby barring Kenya from hosting any international matches due to a lack of facilities that fulfill Fifa criteria.

The judo organization, which received slightly more than Sh73 million during that time period, is next on the list.

According to the organization, funds were given for junior and senior championships for Sh17.6 million, Olympic qualifiers at Sh21.9 million, judo championships worth Sh8 million, and judo federation around Sh26 million.

Given that more well-supported federations with large followings, such as athletics, football, volleyball, and rugby, received less money than the two, there is a substantial discrepancy in allocation.

Football Kenya Federation FKF received Sh66 million in that time period, according to SASDF data, money that was used in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

The money is allocated under three areas notably Social Development (60 percent), Promotion and Development of Sports (35 percent) and Promotion and Development of Arts (five percent) (five percent).

Kenya basketball federation received Sh17.8 million, Kenya Paralympics was allocated Sh31 million, Badminton Kenya Sh9 million, weightlifting federation Sh7.7 million.

The boxing federation was allocated Sh11 million, Kenya cycling federation Sh10 million, Kenya shooting federation Sh5.4 million, and Kenyan Hockey Union Sh3.2 million.
