The Cabinet Secretary of Trade, Investment and Industry Moses Kuria has stated that the Kenya Kwanza government will complete the stalled Naromoru and Karemenu mega dams in Kieni, Nyeri county.
Speaking in Nyeri where he disbursed relief food to Kieni residents, Kuria said that the dams are a long-term solution to the severe drought.
He claimed that the two dams will help with irrigation farming.
“We will revive the dams on a private-public partnership, which has now been transferred to my ministry. Before then, we are going to work with leaders to have a framework of the community,” Kuria said.
The CS said the collaboration will bring in private investors.
“This project will serve the people of Nyeri, Laikipia and Nyandarua. My estimation is within the next 12 months, Kieni will be self-sufficient,” he said.
The decision comes as President William Ruto leads Kenya’s delegation to the 27th Conference of the Parties on Sunday.
He will also be in attendance as the chairman of the African Heads of State and Government Committee on Climate Change.
He will make a national statement for Kenya as well as a statement on behalf of Africa.
This occurrence occurs during a period of interconnected crises, including energy and food insecurity, as well as the worst drought in 40 years in Kenya and the Horn of Africa.
The Head of State is expected to make a strong case for Kenya and Africa, as African nations continue to bear the brunt of the effects of developed-world emissions.
