Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has announced the closure of Kakamega Primary School after a stampede accident that left 14 dead.
While addressing the media on the progress of the investigations, Magoha announced that the school will remain closed until Monday.
He spoke after a meeting with the school’s management, county leaders and security agencies.
“We have decided that the children should rest for the rest of the week,” said the CS.
Meanwhile, the school administration set up counseling desks for parents and school students affected by the tragedy.
Western Regional Commissioner Anne Ngetich has promised investigations will be due next Tuesday in order to ascertain the cause of the stampede.
Ms Ngetich was at the primary school, condoling with families and called for calm.
“We must get to the bottom of this and I assure you we will because something must have happened to trigger this,” she said.
Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who visited the students at the school, assured parents of the bereaved that the county will foot the funeral costs.
“We have many questions and we want answers. We shall stand with the families to the end,” he stated.
He lauded the quick action by the government led by Prof Magoha, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang and Spokesman Cyrus Oguna.
