The government is set to spend Ksh2 billion from the fuel levy, for the dualling of the Eastern Bypass
Treasury documents tabled in Parliament show that the loan, signed on September 28, 2021, is yet to be disbursed to the government.
The key link road which starts at City Cabanas, and Ruai, connects Thika Road and Mombasa Road.
The 32-kilometer bypass was built in 2013, but it was never dualled, which Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia believes should have been done from the start.
The bypass is part of the Nairobi bypass project that designates alternative routes to avoid traffic within the city.
The project was aimed at easing congestion in other roads connecting the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa-Nairobi highway to Thika Superhighway.
Other bypasses include the Southern Bypass that connects Mombasa road to Lang’ata, Kikuyu, and Gitaru.
Northern bypass that stretches from Ruaka to Ruiru, and the western bypass that starts at Gitaru and ends in Ruaka.
