State Pushes New Deposit Assistance Plan to Help More Kenyans Own Homes

The government has called on Kenyans, particularly low and middle income earners, to take advantage of a newly launched Deposit Assistance Plan aimed at easing access to homes under the Affordable Housing Programme.

Speaking during the launch event in South B, Nairobi, Sheila Waweru, the acting CEO of the Affordable Housing Board, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring inclusive access to decent, safe, and dignified housing.

“The dream of owning a home should not be out of reach for hardworking Kenyans. This new plan brings us closer to realizing that dream for thousands,” said Waweru. She noted that under the new arrangement, the deposit required to secure a home has been reduced from 10% to5%, significantly lowering the entry barrier for many aspiring homeowners.

The event was also attended by Nairobi South Ward MCA Waithera Chege, who joined Waweru in engaging residents and stakeholders on the progress of the Mukuru Affordable HousingProject one of the flagship developments under the national housing agenda. So far, the Mukuru project has already delivered homes to over 1,080 beneficiaries, a milestone the board considers a major success.

The Affordable Housing Board announced plans to roll out similar awareness forums across Nairobi and other counties in the coming weeks. The initiative aims to ensure more citizens are informed about housing opportunities and the simplified deposit process.

“Our goal is to empower every Kenyan with the information and tools needed to access affordable housing. No one should be left behind,” Waweru added.

Citizens interested in the programme are encouraged to visit the official Boma Yangu platform or consult their local housing officers for more details on eligibility and application procedures.
