Cabinet Secretary in charge of Transport, James Macharia has announced new regulations to be followed by commuters and transport stakeholders across the country – By Gerald Gekara.
In the new directives;
14 seater – will carry 10 people including the driver and crew
33 seater – will carry 18 people including the driver and crew
51 seater – allowed sitting capacity of 30 including the driver and crew
In case of a motor cycle/bodaboda, only one passenger shall be carried.
Transport CS Macharia further directed TukTuk passenger vehicles would be allowed to carry one passenger at any time.
For a 5-seater car, drivers will be allowed a maximum of 3 passengers (provided in the law).
He further urged public transport operators to ensure practice the various measures outlined by the health ministry, including thermal screening, hand washing, and use of face masks by customers, staff, crew.
These measures come after the resumption of inter-county travel from Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera counties. Matatu owners decried little profits after the ministry slashed passenger capacities by half, to comply with the social distancing directives.
