Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), now claims that strategically placing oil reserves across the country will be the silver bullet in managing future fuel problems.
Odinga’s comments came amid reports of an oil crisis in the country, with cars forced to line for days to fill up at various filling stations.
Odinga said the decision will prevent a similar situation in the future without treating it as an emergency during a consultative meeting with petroleum stakeholders in Nairobi on Wednesday.
“We need to come up with a solution so that we can deal with these challenges not as an emergency, but as a plan for dealing with them in the future,” Odinga added.
Using the recent Russian-Ukraine crisis as an example, the former prime minister claimed that holding reserves in one location, such as Mombasa, makes the country vulnerable in the event of a collapse.
“We need to build strategic reserves across the country in regions where we are not vulnerable to avoid being caught off guard in the future.”
Odinga emphasized the importance of the country resolving the issue rationally by laying up a road map that ensures consumers are not subjected to the same pain as they are now.
