Stray Dogs Kill One, Injure Several in Kirinyaga as Residents Cry for Help

Residents of Ngurubani and its environs in Tebere Ward, Kirinyaga County are living in fear following a surge in stray dog attacks that have left one man dead and several others nursing injuries.

The victim, identified as Kennedy Odinga Obwao, 35, from Kiamanyeki village, died at Kerugoya Hospital after reportedly being bitten by a stray dog. According to local resident Reuben Nderitu, Obwao delayed seeking medical attention due to financial constraints and was unable to afford a tetanus injection.

Tebere Ward MCA Peter Karinga confirmed the death and raised concern over the deteriorating public health situation. “Kennedy didn’t receive medical care in time because he couldn’t afford it. According to his wife, Peninah Wambui, he died from tetanus,” said Karinga. “It’s tragic and preventable.”

Karinga added that the stray dog menace began in February in Kithogo Estate, Ngurubani, where multiple bite victims were treated for tetanus. The situation has since worsened, with two additional cases reported in Kiamanyeki, Moses Kariuki and an 11-year-old girl, who are currently receiving treatment at home.

“This situation is getting out of hand,” Karinga warned. “Unless immediate action is taken, we risk more fatalities.”

The first warning signs appeared on February 13 when two children were attacked by stray dogs in Kithogongo slums and rushed to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital.

Residents are now calling on the Kirinyaga County Government to act swiftly to contain the stray dog population and ensure timely access to essential medical care, including tetanus vaccines. The growing threat has sparked widespread fear, particularly in Kiamanyeki, where residents say the dogs’ unpredictable behavior has made everyday life dangerous.
