Early this morning, raging elephants from the nearby South Marmanet forest crushed to death a 76-year-old man from Sirare village in Laikipia West Constituency.
Mzee Githua Waeru Kamoche was one of several men who had emerged from their homes early in the morning to drive the jumbos out of their farms, but the animals turned on them.
One of the elephants that crushed Mzee Waweru to death was right in front of him when he did so.
The occurrences caused locals to hold a nonviolent protest against the killing and frequent invasion of their crops by marauding elephants from the nearby South Mamarnet Forest.
The elephants wander to the farm in search of grazing because of the ongoing drought, which is severely affecting even wild creatures.
Security personnel dispersed the protesters after they had blocked the Nyahururu-Rumuruti routes in protest of the man’s killing for a number of hours.
The growing invasion of wild animals, according to Joseph Lobenyo and Geoffrey Kamiru, two village leaders from the Sirare region, has sparked protests over the wanton devastation of crops.
They expressed the frustrations of their attempts to contain the animals in their habitat by contacting the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
