Sudan Protesters Demand Military Coup

Thousands of Sudanese came to the streets in the capital, Khartoum, on Saturday to demand that Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s hybrid military-civilian government be disbanded.

The demonstration might exacerbate political tensions in Sudan, jeopardizing the country’s fragile transition to democracy.

The government was set up two years ago when the military deposed Omar al-Bashir following a popular uprising.

Political parties and rebel groups affiliated with the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change, an umbrella organization that led the revolt against al-Bashir, coordinated the protests.

The country is now governed by a joint military-civilian transitional government, but tensions between civilians and generals have grown since a recent coup attempt was defeated. Activists are demanding that the generals relinquish power to civilians.

The demonstrators were bused in from the outskirts of Khartoum and other parts of Sudan to the rally outside the presidential palace in the Sudanese capital, according to the state-run SUNA news agency.

The protestors’ demands are similar to those made earlier this month by Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the head of the ruling Sovereign Council, who stated that dismissing the government would address the continuing political situation.
