Sudan’s conflict-ridden El Gezira state has seen escalating violence, as Rapid Support Forces (RSF) soldiers raid villages, displacing thousands.
Salwa Abdallah, a mother recovering from surgery, recounted a terrifying encounter late last month when RSF troops stormed her home, accusing her of loyalty to the army.
“They said, ‘You killed us, so today we’ll kill you and rape your girls,'” Abdallah told Reuters, now sheltering with her family in New Halfa after a harrowing journey on foot.
The RSF attacks have impacted over 65 villages, with the UN reporting 135,000 new displacements as people flee to states like Kassala and Gedaref, already overwhelmed by the war’s toll.
UN official Clementine Nkweta-Salami condemned the attacks as “atrocious crimes,” drawing parallels to last year’s violence in Darfur.
The Wad Madani Resistance Committee estimates at least 169 people have died since October 20, including 124 in the village of al-Sireha.
Verified footage reveals RSF soldiers mocking elderly men and forcing them to bleat like animals.
The RSF denies ordering attacks, blaming local militias armed by the army. Meanwhile, international calls for intervention grow as civilians bear the brunt of Sudan’s deepening crisis.
