Oil Tanker Blocking The Suez Canal Finally Moved

Osama Rabie, chairman of Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announced on Sunday that an oil ship that broke down in the canal had been pulled away.

“Traffic in both directions had resumed as normal after tugboats managed to move the stranded tanker,” he explained.

The SCA team responded effectively to the mechanical failure of SEAVIGOUR, a 274-meter oil tanker carrying the Maltese flag and transiting the artificial waterway from north to south, according to Rabie, who added that the tanker would continue passage promptly after being repaired.

The SCA had despatched three tugboats earlier in the day to tow the tanker, causing temporary delays in the Suez Canal.

The Suez Canal is a major lifeline for global seaborne trade. Some 12 percent of the world trade volume passes through the artificial canal, a major source of hard currency for Egypt.
