Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu has declared two days of national mourning in honor of former President Mwai Kibaki.
Suluhu announced in a statement that flags in the country and all of their embassies will be flown at half-mast from Friday to Saturday.
“I request all the people of Tanzania to stand with our neighbors in Kenya who are going through a difficult period,” a statement released by the Head of Communication from Suluhu’s office said.
President Kibaki will be laid to rest on Saturday at his rural home in Nyeri County’s Othaya.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, South Sudan’s Salva Kiir, and Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde are among the heads of state who will attend the funeral.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, who announced his mentor and predecessor’s death, is expected to lead Kenyans in his funeral service at the Nyayo National Stadium on Friday.
The government declared Friday a public holiday to allow Kenyans to mourn the deceased President and attend the funeral.
