The Supreme Court will rule on the petition for the 2022 presidential election at 12 p.m. at the Milimani Law Courts, according to Supreme Court registrar Letizia Wachira in a notice served on participating counsels.
Whatever decision the seven Supreme Court justices reach today on the consolidated presidential election petitions will have far-reaching implications for the country’s top political class and the country’s elections agency.
According to the Supreme Court Act and the Supreme Court (Presidential Election Petition) Rules, 2017, at the conclusion of a presidential petition hearing, the court may issue an order dismissing the petition or invalidating the electoral commission’s declaration under Article 138(5) of the Constitution.
The court may also issue an order declaring the president-election elect’s valid or invalid.
The Supreme Court’s decision today will determine the fates of President-elect William Ruto and his main challenger, Raila Odinga, as it will have an impact on their political future.
Both have promised to abide by the Supreme Court’s decision.
