The police have recovered an AK47 rifle suspected to have been utilized in a string of violent robberies in Laikipia.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the suspect a 46-year-old Rankel Nentaam was apprehended in Nanyuki town after days of relentless surveillance.
The suspect admitted to having the lethal arsenal during the interrogation.
“After days of relentless surveillance, DCI sleuths netted the 46-year-old suspect identified as Renkel Lentaam within Nanyuki town, who upon interrogation confessed to be in possession of the deadly arsenal,” wrote DCI on X.
The collaborative effort between the DCI and GSU from Arjijo Operation Camp culminated in a breakthrough as they proceeded to Makurian location inside Mukogodo forest, where the suspected had hidden the illegal firearm and 53 rounds of live ammunition inside a modified tree trunk.
The swift action of the crime busters led to the seizure and documentation of the evidence, which has since been forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for ballistic examination.
The search for potential accomplices is still in progress.
Additionally, the National Police Service (NPS) apprehended robbery suspects in Meru today.
The suspects were found with an AK-47 rifle and an empty magazine at the residence of a fellow gang member as another suspect Agnes Kanana, believed to be associated with the criminal activities was taken into custody to aid in the ongoing investigation.
This development comes less than two days after the police had recovered four firearms—two G3 rifles, a Mini Beretta, and a Carbine AK47—at a home in Lodwar village, Kabachi location, Mutati Sub County in Meru County.
