A Multimedia University student accused of murdering his fellow student Sylvia Kemunto has explained how the killing occurred.
Kemunto, a first-year student pursuing Mass Communication and Computer Science, reportedly died on March 30.
Philip Eric Mutinda, a first-year Electrical Engineering student, surrendered to police at Sultan Hamud Police Station after reports that he was being looked for emerged.
Police sources indicated that Mutinda told investigating officers that Kemunto died after he hit her in a fight at her room at the university.
He said a confrontation ensued when he tried to touch her, during which he hit and pushed her to the wall. He said her head hit the wall, during which she collapsed and died.
According to the suspect, he had been trying to seduce her, but she resisted.
Upon realizing she was dead, he said he wrapped her body in a suitcase, took it to his room briefly before he later dumped it in a water tank rooftop.
Kemunto went missing on March 30 when her mother’s attempts to reach her proved futile.
She visited the school the following day where her whereabouts were confirmed to be unknown. A missing report was filed at Lang’ata Police Station, leading to a search operation.
Police visited the scene for investigation, and it was during the process that a foul smell emanating from the rooftop caught the attention of the officers.
The officers traced the foul smell to a water tank where they discovered the body; that was on April 2.
Kemunto’s roomate had told police that she left her in the room with Mutinda as she left for church.
It is then that a manhunt for the suspect began until he surrendered to police at Sultan Hamud Police Station in Makueni County.
He was transported to Nairobi, where he is being held pending probe.
He will be arraigned this Monday, where police will seek more time to detain him for the probe to be concluded.
