Suspect Identified as Authorities Investigate Grand Blanc Church Shooting

Authorities have identified the suspect in Sunday’s deadly shooting at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford.

The attack left two people dead and eight others injured, one of whom remains in critical condition, police said.

Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye confirmed the suspect’s identity at a Sunday afternoon news conference. Sanford was shot and killed by police within 10 minutes of the initial emergency call, which came at 10:25 a.m. Officers arrived on scene less than a minute later, responding to a situation that unfolded rapidly and with deadly consequences.

Investigators are now focused on piecing together the motive and background of Sanford. While police have not yet released details about any prior criminal history, they are examining his movements, contacts, and potential reasons for targeting the church. Chief Renye stressed that the investigation remains in its early stages, and authorities are working diligently to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Sanford’s actions have left a community in shock. Residents described the normally peaceful township as stunned by the sudden violence. Local officials have emphasized that the priority remains supporting the victims and their families while ensuring the investigation proceeds thoroughly.

Among the eight injured, seven are in stable condition. Police and first responders acted swiftly, with their rapid intervention credited for preventing further casualties. The church and local authorities have offered counseling and support services to those affected, including congregation members and witnesses.

Law enforcement agencies, including state and local investigators, continue to coordinate in reviewing Sanford’s background and the circumstances that led to the shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
