Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a man accused of running a sophisticated police recruitment scam that defrauded desperate job seekers of Ksh.2.5 million.
The suspect, Benedict Odeng’ero Wekesa, was apprehended in Kilimani after three victims reported that he had promised them “guaranteed” slots in the National Police Service (NPS), at a steep cost.
According to investigators, Wekesa allegedly issued each victim a forged recruitment letter, assuring them that their placement was secured, only for the victims to later discover the promises were fake.
“By the time reality finally kicked in, a total of Ksh.2.5 million had changed hands, and the dreams of joining the service had vanished,” the DCI said in a statement on Saturday.
Acting on the complaints, detectives set up an ambush and arrested Wekesa at the Sagret Hotel in Kilimani. During the operation, officers recovered 20 more fake recruitment letters, raising fears that the scam could be wider than initially believed.
A second suspect, thought to be Wekesa’s accomplice, managed to escape moments before the officers struck and is currently being sought by investigators.
Wekesa is in custody as detectives finalise processing ahead of his arraignment. The DCI has urged the public to remain vigilant, warning that authentic recruitment into the National Police Service is free, fair, and transparent.
Investigations are ongoing as officers pursue new leads to track down the fugitive accomplice and unravel the full extent of the scheme.
