The emotional Senator Tabitha Karanja, the mother to deceased Tecra today told court that she never approved the relationship between her daughter and Omar Lali.
The deceased Tecra Muigai was the daughter of Nakuru County Senator Tabitha Karanja and she died on May 2020.
In an inquest before Milimani Law Courts Magistrate Zainab Abdul, today Senator Tabitha told court that her daughter Tecra had informed her she had a friend.
However, it was her testimony that when Tecra introduced Omar Lali to the family, all her neighbors kept on asking her why she allowed the relationship given the age and physical appearance of Omar.
“When people saw the man my daughter was dating everybody asked me why and how I allowed the relationship but as Christian we allowed and let it go” said Tabitha.
Asked whether the age and the appearance of the man (Omar Lali) her daughter brought to her might have made her not to approve the relationship, she said she can’t say she was against the relationship because she was never given an opportunity to sit and hear the story behind the relationship.
According to Tabitha, her daughter had been transferring huge amount of money to Omar’s account.
“The deceased was transferring huge amount of money to Omari’s account, I suspect that Omar might have orchestrated her death because she might have refused to give him money, in our culture we are used to seeing men give money to women and not a man getting money from women, it is the first time in our culture that I saw a young lady transferring money to a 60-year-old man” said Senator Tabitha.
Tecra was airlifted on May 3, 2020 from Lamu to Nairobi to receive treatment after she was reported to have fallen down the stairs in a tragic accident.
A day later she succumbed to injuries which raised questions as to how she met her death given the fact that she was with Omar in the house on the fateful day.
On May 4, 2020 a day after the news of her death Police arrested her fiancé Omar Lali in connection with her death.
Omar was detained for 21 days to allow days for investigations after which he was released after the prosecution concluded that there was no sufficient evidence to connect him with the death.
In June 2020 few days after Omar was released, detectives investigating the death of Tecra picked inconsistencies into the account of how she died.
And in July the same year Omar Lali was rearrested and charged with the murder of Tecra.
Three days later on July 16,2020 the ODPP dropped murder charges against Omar.
The ODPP later preferred an inquest with Omar Lali as the primary person of interest to unveil the cause of the death.
A postmortem examination indicated that Tecra might have died from trauma to the skull.
The inquest proceeds in Court.
