The Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) has issued a strong public condemnation following the violent assault on its Secretary General, Father Dr. Charles Kitima.
The attack occurred on the night of April 30, 2025, at approximately 10:00 p.m. at Father Kitima’s residence located within the TEC headquarters in Kurasini, Dar es Salaam.
In an official statement, TEC expressed deep sorrow over the “brutal and evil attack,” which left Father Kitima seriously injured. He is currently receiving medical care at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where doctors report he is in stable condition. TEC offered heartfelt thanks to those who responded quickly and ensured he received urgent medical attention, as well as the medical team now attending to him.
Calling the attack “inhumane,” TEC appealed to the Tanzania Police Force and all relevant security organs to urgently and transparently investigate the incident. The Church emphasized the need for swift action to identify, arrest, and prosecute all individuals involved, whether in planning or executing the crime. The Conference also stressed the importance of conducting the investigation without distortion or delay, noting that this would help restore public confidence and a sense of justice.
TEC acknowledged and appreciated the cooperation so far from the Government, police, and other national and international institutions that have shown support and expressed concern. The Conference urged all Tanzanians—especially the faithful and people of goodwill—to pray for Father Kitima’s full recovery and for continued peace and unity in the country.
“We also urge patience and endurance,” the statement concluded, “as we await the full truth from ongoing investigations.”
The assault occurred around 10:00 p.m. in Dar es Salaam, shortly after Father Kitima had left a social venue. He was reportedly struck in the head with a blunt object while heading to the restroom.
The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police have confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. Investigations are ongoing as the nation grapples with the shocking violence against a respected religious and civic leader.
On Friday, Boniface Mwabukusi, President of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), visited Father Kitima in hospital and later posted a message of solidarity on Instagram.
“It was indeed a brutal attack aimed at ending his life,” Mwabukusi wrote, emphasizing the gravity of the incident.
Among his points, Father Kitima emphasized the importance of courage in speaking out, being willing to pay the price for justice, and not fearing the cost of meaningful national reform, especially regarding electoral integrity.
The attack has drawn condemnation from civic and religious circles, with many interpreting it as a warning sign for voices advocating reform.
