Tanzania’s former Prime Minister Cleopa Msuya dies at 94

    Tanzania’s former First Vice President and Prime Minister, Mzee Cleopa David Msuya, has passed away. He died at 9:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, 7 May 2025, at Mzena Hospital in Kijitonyama, Dar es Salaam. He was 94.

    In a national address, President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the passing of Mzee Msuya, revealing that he had been battling a long-term heart condition.

    He received treatment both locally—at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute and Mzena Hospital—and abroad in London, United Kingdom.

    “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and the nation at large for this great loss. I hereby declare a seven-day mourning period, from 7 to 13 May, during which the national flag shall be flown at half-mast,” said President Samia.

    She added that further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated by the Government in due course.

    Born on 4 January 1931 in the Kilimanjaro Region, Mzee Msuya served as Prime Minister of Tanzania on two occasions, at one point concurrently holding the position of First Vice President.
