Telegram Updates Privacy Terms, Potentially Exposing User Data to Authorities

Telegram users may soon see their data, including phone numbers and IP addresses, accessible to authorities under the messaging app’s updated privacy terms.

CEO Pavel Durov announced the changes aimed at deterring criminal activities on the platform, which has seen rapid growth, including approximately 15.6 million users in Kenya.

According to the new terms, Telegram will comply with judicial requests to surrender users’ information if it relates to violations of the platform’s policies.

Durov emphasized that while the vast majority of users engage positively with the app, a small fraction poses a threat, affecting the reputation of the nearly billion-strong user base.

In addition to IP addresses, the updated service could track users’ history of username changes and devices used.

The primary focus of these measures is on terror suspects, as Telegram has faced scrutiny over its potential use for illicit activities.

Since its launch in 2013, Telegram has prioritized speed and security, resisting government interference.

However, Durov’s recent arrest for allegedly enabling criminal activities has raised concerns.

He asserts that enhancing security while protecting user privacy remains a top priority and pledged to provide updates on progress soon.
