TFA, KFS Share Forest Resource Monitoring System

According to Kenya’s Timber Act, it is illegal for anyone to sell or offer for sale wood under any name, or a colourable imitation of one, the Rules specify to describe a particular grade of wood if the wood does not meet the requirements of that grade as specified.

A team of KFS officers conducted a learning and experience-sharing mission on the Forest Resource Monitoring System being implemented by TFS, following a meeting between the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, and a team from Traffic East Africa and the Tanzania Forest Service (TFA) regarding monitoring of trans-boundary timber trade between Kenya and Tanzania.

With the help of TRAFFIC East Africa, a system is being developed that will soon be launched throughout East Africa and help stop the illicit trading and transportation of forest resources, including wood and non-timber.

The meeting comes after the 10th Stakeholders Forum on wood and Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) in Eastern and Southern Africa, held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

During the forum, participants discussed ways to promote collaborations and funding to ensure the sustainability of the trade in wood and NTFPs.
