Thailand’s Supreme Court has ordered former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to serve a one-year prison sentence, ruling that his previous detention in hospital did not count as time served.
Thaksin, who returned from 15 years in self-exile in 2023, was initially sentenced to eight years for graft and abuse of power, later reduced to one year through a royal pardon. Shortly after his return, he was transferred from prison to a VIP hospital ward, where he remained for months citing health concerns.
On Monday, a panel of five judges determined that the extended hospital stay was unlawful and violated enforcement procedures, declaring it invalid as part of his prison term. Following the verdict, Thaksin was taken into custody and moved to Bangkok Remand Prison.
In court, the 76-year-old accepted the ruling, saying he may have lost his freedom but still had the “freedom of thought” to contribute to his country.
The decision comes just days after his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was removed as prime minister, marking the latest setback for the Shinawatra political dynasty. Analysts say the judgment further weakens the influence of the Pheu Thai party, which has already lost its grip on government.
