Thieves break into maternity ward, steal phones from patients

Police in Kisumu are investigating a theft incident at Lumumba Hospital, where an unknown number of suspects broke into the maternity unit and stole patients’ mobile phones.

The suspects gained entry by scaling the hospital perimeter wall around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, before stealing from patients who were sleeping at the time.

John Oywa, Kisumu County Chief Officer in Charge of Communication, Public Affairs, and Special Programs, said police and hospital administration are actively investigating the incident.

According to Oywa, the hospital administrator and security officers on duty recorded statements with the police.

He states that in order to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy, the County’s Department of Medical Services is enforcing perimeter fencing, including the installation of electric fences in County Health facilities.

He says the county has also made a decision to reorganize security officers and those found to have been negligent on their duties will face disciplinary action adding that the county was apologetic to those affected.
