Thousands Of Families Fear Eviction Following Gilgil Rail Construction

Residents have vowed to oppose the project, citing the fact that it was not on the original map and that they had not been consulted during an ongoing feasibility study.

Over 3,000 families in the GEMA estate in Gilgil, Nakuru County, are facing eviction and house demolition after the government began the process of re-constructing a railway line from Naivasha to Sleeping Warrior.

Residents have vowed to oppose the project, citing the fact that it was not on the original map and that they had not been consulted during an ongoing feasibility study.

According to residents, the Gilgil-Sleeping Warrior Railway would take over 240 acres, though the government was quick to point out that it would use the old railway line.

Ali Kariuki said the Government acquired 50 acres from the GEMA land-buying company in 2007 after following the due process.

Speaking after a meeting on Saturday, land trader Reuben Omenda said that a feasibility study had already been conducted in the area without the involvement of area residents.

However, some of the residents wondered why the government project was being carried out in secret yet the residents would lose over 240 acres to the railway line.

Some residents said they had been forced to stop construction of their house due to the current impasse with fears that it could be demolished in the future.
