Three Men Sentenced to Life in Prison for Stealing a Phone, a Memory Card and Shoes

Three men have been handed life sentences by a Ngong court after being found guilty of committing violent robbery in separate incidents.

The trio had been charged with robbery with violence, with prosecutors presenting compelling evidence that led the court to impose the maximum penalty.

Court records show that on December 18, 2021, the men violently robbed a victim at Kibiku in Kajiado West, stealing a Huawei Y9 phone worth Ksh24,990, a memory card valued at Ksh3,995, and shoes worth Ksh4,000.

Investigations further revealed that the suspects accessed the victim’s mobile money account and transferred Ksh3,970 to another line.

In delivering the judgment, the presiding magistrate ruled that the prosecution had proven all elements of the offence beyond reasonable doubt.

”Before fleeing, the attackers inflicted violence on their victim, leaving him injured. The court ruled that the Prosecution had proved all elements of robbery with violence beyond a reasonable doubt, sentencing the three men to life imprisonment,” read part of the ruling.

One of the convicts was also separately charged with resisting arrest in Bulbul, Kajiado North, on December 29, 2021. For this offence, the court handed him an additional two-year prison sentence.

The court further established that one of the three had taken part in an earlier robbery on September 5, 2021, at Oloolua in Kajiado North. According to court documents, the man and his accomplices violently attacked a victim and made away with property valued at Ksh227,000.

The stolen items included a smart TV worth Ksh95,000, a Honda concrete vibrator valued at Ksh36,000, two mobile phones worth Ksh44,000, and Ksh50,000 in cash.

During the attack, the victim was physically assaulted and left with injuries before the suspects fled.

For this second robbery, the court imposed an additional life sentence, underscoring the gravity of repeated violent crimes amid a growing wave of organised criminal gangs in the country.
