Three suspects linked to the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were, were on Tuesday brought back before the Kibera Law Courts as the court issued fresh directions in the ongoing high-profile case.
The suspects, Lake Basin officer, Ebel Ochieng, alias Dave Calo, William Shigali, and Edwin Odhiambo, were initially arraigned on June 5 but did not enter a plea pending a mandatory mental assessment. They have now spent 50 days in custody and are seeking release on bail.
During Tuesday’s session, it also emerged that one of the suspects, Calo, had allegedly threatened the state prosecutor during a previous court appearance, a development likely to weigh into the bail considerations.
So far, five individuals have been charged in connection with the MP’s murder. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved murder charges against all five, citing sufficient evidence from ongoing investigations.
MP Were was shot dead on the evening of April 30, 2025, at approximately 7:40 p.m. near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Valley Road, within Kilimani Sub-County, Nairobi. The killing sent shockwaves across the country, sparking calls for swift justice and tighter security for public officials.
The case continues to draw national attention as the court prepares to determine whether the suspects will be released on bail ahead of the next phase of the trial.
