Three traffic police officers from Central Police Station were arrested on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, for allegedly extorting money from motorists at the Globe Cinema roundabout under the pretense of enforcing traffic laws.
The officers were apprehended during an anti-corruption operation conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) following numerous complaints from motorists, bodaboda riders, and the general public.
The arrested officers are identified as: Cpl Oscar Serem Biwott (No. 84220), PC Simon Kiplagat Nyunyutik (No. 89197) and PC Edwin Benedict Mubweka (No. 82069).
According to the EACC, investigations conducted over several days confirmed allegations that the officers were soliciting bribes from motorists.
During the sting operation, the trio was found to have collected bribes totaling Ksh 48,250 within just two hours, between 6:30 am and 8:30 am.
The suspects were taken to the EACC Integrity Centre, where they recorded statements before being booked at Kilimani Police Station. The operation is part of a broader strategic initiative aimed at curbing corruption within traffic law enforcement.
To address the rising cases of traffic corruption, the EACC has partnered with the National Police Service (NPS) to conduct a comprehensive audit of police systems and practices.
This initiative seeks to identify and seal weaknesses that enable corruption within police operations across Kenya.
The EACC has urged members of the public to continue reporting incidents of bribery and corruption to ensure accountability and transparency within the traffic department.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
