Three suspected thugs were on Wednesday morning shot dead after they tried to mug an officer in Kahawa West, Nairobi.
Police reports said that the officer was among a team of officers who had posed as pedestrians when the morning incident happened in Kamae area, Kahawa West, Nairobi, at about 5 am on Wednesday.
The police decided to lay the trap after numerous complaints from locals over a rise in mugging cases in the area especially in the morning hours.
Nairobi police boss James Mugera said that the three man-gang which was unaware of the trap attacked the officers, who were in plain clothes, prompting a fatal rebuff.
This led to the death of the three suspects and the recovery of a pistol that had three bullets and five mobile phones believed to have been stolen from other pedestrians.
The bodies of the three were moved to City Mortuary pending postmortem and identification.
“The suspects did not have identification documents and efforts to identify them are ongoing,” said Mugera.
Police also said that they have intensified operations in the city to tame cases of armed robberies.
