Thwake Dam, built on the boundary of Makueni and Kitui counties, is now 65 per cent complete and is expected to be completed by June 2022.

The Chinese Ghezoubha Group Company has been praised by the government for redirecting Athi and Thwake River water to two gigantic tunnels to allow embankment work at the Thwake Multi-Purpose Dam.

Makueni County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed, speaking to the press after witnessing the shutdown and redirection of the Athi and Thwake rivers to tunnels at the site, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expediting the project’s completion.

“As stakeholders, the various Ministries, State Department and Agencies are working together to ensure that the contractor is paid on time to fast track the construction work at the site and they have no reason to delay,” said Mohammed.

The project, which is directly employing nearly 1,161 locals in dam building, is also boosting local companies by sourcing construction supplies such as cement, steel, and gasoline for the dam’s development.

When the dam is finished, it is estimated that over 1.3 million people would have access to purified water, helping to achieve Universal Health Care by eliminating water-borne diseases.
