A Nairobi man has been charged before the Milimani Law Courts with publishing false and misleading information on social media concerning members of the National Police Service.
Godfrey Mwasiagi Kakan Maiyo, also known online as “@kanmaiyo” , appeared in court on Thursday, 30,October, 2025, facing one count of publication of false information.
The prosecution told the court that on July 7, 2025, at an unknown location within Kenya, the accused posted a statement on his TikTok account claiming that police officers were responsible for the killing of children and calling on members of the public to target the families and children of police officers in retaliation.
The post, which read in part, “kama kuna polisi unajua anza kumuulika familia yake na watoto yake haiezikuwa et hao ndio wanaaua watoto ya watu wengine halafu watoto yao wabaki…”, was flagged by investigators as false, malicious and intended to cause panic and fear among officers and their families.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the accused knowingly published the statement without lawful justification, intending to provoke fear and incitement within the police service.
Digital forensics officers attached to the DCI Headquarters are expected to produce evidence linking the accused to the TikTok account and verifying authorship of the video post. The prosecution further indicated that witnesses from the National Police Service would testify about the panic caused by the publication.
The accused was released on a cash bail of Ksh 40,000 pending mention of the case at a later date.
