The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has issued a strong statement following viral footage showing tourists standing outside their vans in close proximity to wildlife during the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara.
The County Government of Narok clarified that the incident occurred at the flooded Purungat Gate, where visitors had alighted while waiting for the waters to subside. However, the Ministry said the images risked damaging Kenya’s international reputation as a leader in conservation and sustainable tourism.
Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano reaffirmed that Kenya remains committed to protecting both visitors and wildlife.
She announced tougher measures to support Narok County in managing the Maasai Mara, including stricter enforcement of park rules, holding tour operators accountable, and boosting ranger presence at sensitive crossing points.
Tour operators who allow clients to disregard regulations will face legal or disciplinary action. The Ministry also plans awareness campaigns, better signage, and joint oversight with the county government to ensure such incidents do not recur.
“The Maasai Mara migration is one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles, and we must act decisively to preserve its integrity,” CS Miano said.
