A fire broke out in the wee hours of Thursday morning at Gikomba Market, destroying property of unknown value.
According to reports, a fire broke out in the Jua Kali area, destroying a large number of stalls, prompting traders to call for a long-term solution to the recurring fires.
Meanwhile, traders and firefighters are on the scene attempting to extinguish the fire.
Several fires have ravaged the Gikomba market, East Africa’s largest open market, over the years.
In October 2017, the government announced a Ksh.19 billion plan to build a multi-story market to house the more than 20,000 Gikomba traders while also putting an end to the frequent fires.
However, the plan is yet to be implemented.
