Tragedy as Police Officer, 3 Others Swept Away by Nairobi Floods

At least four were killed in separate incidents after being carried away by floods in different parts of Nairobi.

This follows the heavy rains experienced in Nairobi on Sunday March 24, 2024.

A police officer who was rescuing trapped families in Kamukunji is among the four people who were killed by the floods.

According to the police report, an officer from Kamukunji police station had responded to a distress call to rescue a family that was trapped in a flooded house when he was overpowered by the heavy floods.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei explained that the officer and his colleagues managed to rescue the trapped family but he was swept by the floods as they were leaving the house of the flood victims.

Why did machete-wielding assailant(s) kill two cousins returning from church ‘kesha’?

“We searched for him in vain. We are going back to the place for further searches,” said Bungei.

Police are still searching for the body of the missing officer, as they warn members of the public to be careful when moving across flooded areas in the city.

The Nairobi police boss further disclosed that three other people were killed by the floods in Gigiri, Dagoretti and Buruburu areas in Nairobi.

He added that the floods were being caused by poor drainage systems in some parts of the city.

Several people have been displaced by the floods in Nairobi after the heavy rains that started Sunday night to Monday morning.

Police have also warned of other associated health risks since some pit latrines and open sewage systems were overflowing in some slums in the city, putting lives of residents at risk.

In addition, residential houses near rivers and drainage tunnels were flooded, as well as some roads leading to estates being blocked by floods.
