A devastating explosion rocked the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Biscailuz Training Center early Friday morning, leaving at least three people dead, according to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The blast occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time, at the department’s facility known for housing special enforcement units and the bomb squad.
The victims are believed to be affiliated with the sheriff’s department, though their identities have not been released pending family notifications.
“I just spoke to U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli about what appears to be a horrific incident,” said Bondi in a statement on X.
“Our federal agents are at the scene and we are working to learn more. Please pray for the families of the sheriff’s deputies killed.”
A coordinated federal and local response is underway. The FBI, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have joined the investigation. The Los Angeles Fire Department’s arson unit and LAPD’s bomb squad are also assisting.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on X that city resources are fully engaged, while LA County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger expressed deep sorrow.
“I am heartbroken to hear of the terrible tragedy… My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are with the brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time,” Barger stated.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Authorities have not ruled out accidental detonation during a training exercise, though no official details have been confirmed.
The Biscailuz Training Center, located east of downtown L.A., is a vital facility for specialized law enforcement training, including bomb disposal.
