A passenger bus plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni Ferry crossing on Sunday morning, raising serious safety concerns in the area.
According to officials from Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), the accident occurred when the bus experienced brake failure while ascending from the ferry on the Likoni side.
Suddenly unable to control its descent, the bus veered downhill and plunged into the ocean, alarming onlookers and passengers.
Emergency responders from the Kenya Red Cross reported that nine individuals sustained injuries in the incident. Seven were treated on-site, while two were transported to local hospitals for further medical attention. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported.
The accident caused significant disruption to the busy ferry channel, halting transport activities and stranding both vehicles and pedestrians who were unable to board ferries. The chaos delayed countless commuters, leading to frustration and confusion among travelers.
Efforts to retrieve the bus were successful, and as of the latest update, a slow return to normalcy is beginning to be observed at the crossing channel. KFS is expected to launch an investigation into the incident to prevent future occurrences and ensure passenger safety.
