Residents in Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County, are mourning the death of a man who drowned while taking a selfie with his lover.
The man was among travelers who had toured Gicheru Falls and was taking a photo with his lover when he slipped and fell into a waterfall and was swept away.
According to Ephantus Bundi, who was present at the time of the incident, the two were taking a selfie while others watched from a distance.
Confirming the Wednesday evening incident, Gichugu sub-county Police commander Edward Ndirangu said six of the eight people who came to visit the fall were from Nairobi and two from Kutus in Kirinyaga.
“Right now we are searching the 26-year-old man and we will not rest until he is found,” Ndirangu said.
On Thursday morning, residents and friends gathered on the riverbank to assist in the search.
“We know the history of this river. It is dangerous and poses a challenge for our search,” Dickson Gicimu said.
