A three-year-old boy died early Tuesday morning after a fire gutted their family home in Kodhiambo village, Kochogo Location, Nyando Sub-county. His twin sister survived the blaze unharmed.
According to Kochogo North Assistant Chief Yvonne Awuor, the twins had been left sleeping in the house after their mother left for work at the Ahero market. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
“Despite efforts by villagers who rushed to the scene, the flames spread rapidly and consumed household items, including mattresses,” Awuor said.
Police officers from Ahero have retrieved the child’s body and launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire. The tragedy has left the community in shock, raising renewed concerns about child safety and the difficult decisions many parents face in balancing work and childcare amid tough economic times.
Authorities have urged residents to be vigilant and explore safer childcare alternatives to avoid similar incidents.
