Four people have died and others injured following a tragic road accident early Saturday morning along Thika Road near Membley, Ruiru.
The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. when a private saloon car rammed into a stalled trailer close to the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the car was speeding and had little time to react.
Poor visibility, due to non-functional street lights, and the trailer driver’s alleged failure to place a warning triangle, worsened the situation.
Footage from the scene showed a mangled wreck and a crowd of onlookers as police and emergency responders conducted rescue operations.
An ambulance was also present to assist the injured.
The fatal accident comes during the busy Easter weekend, a period often marked by increased road travel and, unfortunately, higher rates of road accidents.
In response to the rising number of incidents, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched a nationwide crackdown on traffic offenders earlier this week.
Speaking in Mombasa, NTSA Chairman Khatib Mwashetani outlined six key safety directives: observe speed limits, avoid drunk driving, remove or mark stalled vehicles, ensure vehicles are serviced, plan for adequate rest before travel, and report reckless driving via the 911 hotline.
NTSA officers have been deployed across the country, with 19 violations already recorded along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway on Thursday night.
Authorities continue to urge road users to prioritize safety to avoid further loss of life.
